Precociously gifted with a pencil, Waldie was packed off to Farnham School of Art at the absurdly young age of thirteen.

A lifetime submerged in the world of pure art beckoned. However, a vision of starvation induced a panic and he ran away to London to become a junior visualiser. Here he was required to know the local positioning of a coupon on any given advert.

His ability with a pencil saved him from a lifetime of penury as he was often required to produce fashion drawings. This trick enabled him to become a senior visualiser at the now defunct but fabled G.S.Royds, where he worked on the Courtaulds fashion account. The sixties had just begun and his pencil was replaced by a set of croppers and the smart photographers telephone numbers. This affinity with - and enjoyment of - photography stayed with him from that day onwards.

Soon though the lure of fame and fortune proved irresistible and he was the first creative person to join the fabulous Peter Marsh at his new agency, Allen Brady & Marsh. His coupon positioning skills were well used here and his creative life would have trundled merrily along if were it not for the creative explosion that happened in London in the shape of Doyle Dane & Bernbach, Papert Koeing & Lois. Advertising as we knew it had changed forever and Waldie wanted part of it. His opportunity came when invited to join Britain's most exciting agency, Collett Dickenson & Pearce.

This fifteen year period of his life produced the main body of his best work; Benson & Hedges, Heineken etc, etc. He was then persuaded to join a breakaway group headed by Frank Lowe. Frank's agency enjoyed a meteoric growth and success in which Waldie played his part.

Over the years Waldie's activities have been varied and prodigious. They include: writing for magazines, Exhibition Design, Film Posters, Record Covers, Book Design, Fountain Pen Design, Illustration and Lectures - both here and abroad. In addition he has turned his hand to GalleryTrusteeship, Packaging Design, Interior Design and also the occasional Film, TV, Poster and Press Campaign.

Apart from being a judge on most advertising award juries he has also won most of them; notably the Gold Award at D&AD.
